How to Change Your Email Account Password or Mailbox Quota in cPanel

5 min read

Change Email Password in cPanel in 6 Easy Steps (Plus Mailbox Quota) | Hosticko #

Change email password in cPanel whenever a team member forgets their password, you suspect unauthorized access,
or you’re rotating credentials for better security. In the same “Manage” screen, you can also increase or reduce the
mailbox quota (storage limit) to prevent “mailbox full” errors.

In cPanel, open Email Accounts and click Manage next to the mailbox.

When you should change the password or quota #

  • Password reset: user forgot password or can’t log in.
  • Security: you noticed suspicious login attempts or forwarded mail rules you didn’t create.
  • Staff changes: employee left the company (rotate passwords immediately).
  • Mailbox full: incoming emails bounce due to quota/storage limits.
  • Scaling: a department mailbox (sales/support) needs more space.

How to change email password in cPanel #

Follow these steps to change email password in cPanel. This updates the mailbox password used by Webmail,
Outlook/Thunderbird, and any mobile mail app connected to that address.

  1. Log in to cPanel for your Hosticko hosting plan.
  2. Go to EmailEmail Accounts.
  3. Find the email address you want to update, then click Manage.
  4. Scroll to the Security section.
  5. Enter a new password in New Password.
    • Use the Generate option if available to create a strong password.
    • If there is a “show/hide” (eye) icon, use it to verify what you typed before saving.
  6. Click Update Email Settings to save changes.

After you change the password, every device/app using that mailbox must be updated (Outlook, Apple Mail, Android/iPhone Mail, etc.).
Otherwise, you’ll get repeated authentication prompts or “password incorrect” errors.

How to change mailbox quota in cPanel #

Mailbox quota controls how much storage a mailbox can use on the server. When the mailbox hits the limit, it may stop receiving new mail.
Here’s how to adjust it:

  1. Log in to cPanel.
  2. Go to EmailEmail Accounts.
  3. Click Manage next to the mailbox.
  4. In the Storage section, adjust Storage Space (quota):
    • Increase the quota to give the mailbox more room.
    • Or set it to Unlimited if appropriate (only do this if your hosting disk space can handle it).
  5. Click Update Email Settings.
Mailbox quota is configured in the Storage Space area of the mailbox “Manage” screen.

Mailbox quota best practices #

  • Remember: mailbox storage counts toward your overall hosting disk usage.
If your hosting package disk space is full, increasing mailbox quota won’t help.
  • For large or long-term email storage needs, consider archiving old mail locally (Outlook archive) or using IMAP cleanup rules.
  • Use cPanel’s tools (like email disk usage/cleanup features) to remove or prune old messages if the mailbox is bloated.
  • Department inboxes (e.g., support@, sales@) often grow fast—review quota monthly.

Common issues and quick fixes #

Password changed but Outlook/Phone keeps asking again #

  • Double-check you updated the password on every device using the mailbox.
  • Confirm the username is the full email address (example: info@yourdomain.com).
  • Try removing and re-adding the account in the mail client if it keeps caching old credentials.

Mailbox is full and emails are bouncing #

  • Increase the mailbox quota (steps above).
  • Delete large emails/attachments, then empty trash/spam folders.
  • Use email cleanup tools to prune older mail if the mailbox is overloaded.

“Unlimited” quota but still out of space #

“Unlimited” mailbox quota does not mean unlimited server space. The mailbox can still be restricted by your hosting
account’s total disk space. Free up disk usage or upgrade storage if needed.

Security tips for email accounts #

  • Use strong passwords (12–16+ characters, mixed case, numbers, symbols).
  • Don’t share one mailbox password across multiple people if you can avoid it.
  • If a mailbox is used by a team, consider using separate mailboxes + forwarders, or use a shared inbox approach through your email client.
  • Change passwords immediately after staff transitions.

Email Accounts (cPanel Docs).

FAQs #

Will changing my email password log me out everywhere? #

Yes. Any app/device using that mailbox will need the new password (webmail, Outlook, phones, SMTP apps).

What quota should I set for business email? #

For typical business use, start with 1–5GB per mailbox (depending on your plan) and adjust based on usage.
If the mailbox is shared (support/sales), you may need more.

Can I rename an email address in cPanel? #

Typically, you create a new mailbox and use forwarders to route mail from the old address to the new one.
